taking a cue // moonrise kingdom

Moonrise Kingdom, a 2012 dramatic comedy directed by Wes Anderson, is a film about two twelve year olds, Suzy and Sam, who fall in love and run away on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965. Instead of Anderson's usual films about damaged and dissatisfied adults, this film lets you view this idyllic and attractively eccentric world through Suzy's binoculars.

This is my personal favorite Wes Anderson film and here I take inspiration from the movie itself and Suzy for today's Taking a Cue.

taking a cue // Mia in Fish Tank

Fish Tank is a 2009 British drama written and directed by Andrea Arnold. The film revolves around Mia, a 15 year old volatile teenager and aspiring dancer. When Mia's mother gets a new, attractive boyfriend, Mia's life changes forever. This film is definitely sad but I really enjoyed it. It's available on Netflix Instant.

taking a cue // lost in translation

Lost in Translation is one of my favorite movies. The film, directed by Sophia Coppola, is about a lost and neglected wife who meets a Hollywood actor well past his prime. The two hit it off in Tokyo, learning more about themselves through their relationship. I've always felt a connection with this film because like Charlotte, I have constantly struggled with figuring out who I want to be. The backdrop of Tokyo reflects both the bustling world Charlotte yearns to be a part of yet how completely removed she is from it as she stares out through her hotel window into the city below.

taking a cue // mariana in Sidewalls

Sidewalls is a romantic comedy that follows two individuals, Mariana and Martin, who are neighbors in the sprawling city of Buenos Aires but have never met. They are both slightly damaged in their own ways but are trying to make the best of things.

Mariana, played by Pilar Lopez de Ayala, is coping with a break up of four years and has just moved to a new apartment. While trying to get her life back in order, she continues her job as a shop window designer, maybe becoming a bit too attached to the mannequins she works with.

She hesitantly accepts a date offer, she finally starts going swimming as she has always hoped to do, and she is very preoccupied with finding Waldo in a book she has had since she was a little girl.

This movie is beautiful. It's a wonderful combination of "real life sad", a sadness many people can relate to, and hope for finding love. Even though they live in buildings next to each other, it is almost like the city is trying to keep Mariana and Martin apart until just the right moment. This sweet movie is available on Netflix Instant now. If you watch it, let me know what you thought of it.

Taking A Cue // Tiny Furniture

Tiny Furniture is a film about a girl who returns home from college to find her welcome may have been worn. It's a funny look at that awkward stage of almost-adulthood mixed with a bit of self entitlement my generation exudes.

Aura, the young woman trying to figure out what to do with her life, always looks like she is attempting to but slightly failing at looking pulled together.

Taking a cue from Aura in Tiny Furniture, this is my inspired outfit. Add some messy hair and wallah!

The film itself is a bit funny and refreshing, which made me very interested in learning about Lena Dunham's new work, the HBO show Girls. Her character is extremely similar to the one in Tiny Furniture but with a few more misguided friends thrown into the mix. I recommend you check it out if you are into gritty, funny, awkward looks at young adult life. The pilot episode just premiered last night. You can watch is here for free!

taking a cue : the virgin suicides

Cecilia isn't in the movie for long, if you've seen it or if you remember the title of the movie, you probably know why. I always have a soft spot for girls in distress. I'd like to imagine that lace dress was her favorite and she wore it everyday that summer. This outfit is inspired by Cecilia.
